Newark, DE Area Guide
Newark, with its population of about 29,000 people, was founded by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers in 1694 and officially established when it was awarded its charter from King George II in 1758. Schools have played a big part in Newark’s history from the grammar school founded by Francis Alison in 1743 to being the alma mater of three signers of the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge was fought outside Newark and legend tells of that being the first time that the Stars and Stripes flew in battle.
The little hamlet between the creeks that was founded with the country has become a lively small city, retaining its college town charm as well as becoming commercially and industrially diverse. Newark has renewed its commitment to preserving its downtown history while businesses have thrived and grown in the area. Serving as home to the University of Delaware students, Newark is a place where residents and visitors alike enjoy the setting and the activities. Bring your family for a visit of the area and you’ll fall in love with it as so many before you have!
